Ty Law a Jet...

This morning on my way to work I was thinking about Ty Law. I had not heard of him getting signed yet and I wondered if there was a chance he might come back to The Patriots.

Then when I got to work, I read this:

ESPN.com: Law agrees to multiyear deal with Jets.

That answers that question. Ty Law is a Jet. This will make things interesting.

Apparently the money is about the same as what The Pats offered, about 6 mil per year, but The Jets are giving him a 3 year deal, laden with incentives I'm sure, as opposed to the 4 year deal The Pats had offered him.

Funny, Ty Law considered The Pats offer an insult. Now, in the end, he will wind up taking less. Making the deal even less attractive to those indoctrinated in 'The Belichick Way', The Jests may actually have to cut some playahs and re-structure some contracts to make room for Ty.

I would not want to see The Pats have to cut players to make room for a big free agent contract, especially if that free agent is an over 30 cornerback coming off a pretty serious foot injury.

The Pats / Jets games will certainly have some added interest now. Personally, I am not shaking in my boots at the prospect of having to face Law twice a year. Don't get me wrong. I'm not disrespecting Ty (Heaven forbid!). The guy is a great cornerback but will he still have that break on the ball that he did prior to his injury?

Plus, The Pats are familiar with Law. His style of play and his tendencies are not going to change. However, I have no doubt that the ever-adaptable Patriots are more than capable of changing up their offensive schemes to deal with Law. In the long run, facing Law will not be any different for The Pats than when they go up against any other high-end cornerback around the league. Would I prefer he had not signed with the Jets? Obvioulsy. I would much rather have seen him sign to a team outside of the AFC East. To be honest, I was hoping he would wind up coming back to The Pats.

Now all I can say is, bring it on.

When I think of The Pats facing off against the rest of the NFL this year, this particular lyric runs through my head:

"With just a touch of my burning hand
I'm gonna live my life to to destroy your world"

"In Belichick We Trust"

Hey, I was thinking the same thing! At least about the contract part, being less than what he was offered by the Patriots a while ago, which he snubbed as "insulting" and followed up by acting like an ass all last off-season. Oh how quickly the tides change. I liken it to the D-lowe contract situation last year.

I have always liked Ty; he was my favorite player on the Patriots for many years. But my first thought the other day, upon hearing these numbers tossed about, was that the Jets were giving him too much, and it will hurt their cap (yay!)

I wish I could feel the same way about him as I used to. He's such a playmaker, and I'm pretty sure he'll recover to close to his old form, but my respect has tarnished. His public bitching & moaning really left a bitter taste in my mouth. Despite his talent, I couldn't wish for him back this year. I hope I see him burned in coverage at least a few times this year.

You know, I really lost a lot of respect for him as well. Hey-I can understand these guys aren't always going to be happy with their contracts, and that's fine and within their rights. But please, spare us the whining in public, because the average person can't relate and really doesn't give a crap. That said, I think the pats will be more than fine without him-we did it most of last year anyway with our 'patchwork defense'.

Yes you are right there, much like D-Lowe, and Nomah for that matter.

I don't really have a problem with Ty. It was not my intention to dis the guy. He was a great player, really one of the best Patriots of all time and I truly appreciate that.

He could be kind of a jackass at times off the field, especially when it came to $$$ but at the same time, we would not have won our 1st Superbowl without him. I actually still get goosebumps when I watch him intercept that pass in my Superbowl 36 DVD, so for that I will be forever greatful. And don't forget, without Ty Law, we would not have the Peyton Manning Face!

I personally think the Jests were kind of stupid to take him on at that salary coming off that injury but if he comes back 100% and has a great year, maybe they look like geniuses (hopefully not!) ;-)

You are right there FS. A lot of people seem to be forgetting that the Pats did not have Ty Law from Nov on last year, so I think the Pats will be ok without him this year.

It will be interesting to see how his presence on the Jets changes the dynamic of their defense vs the rest of the AFC East... I still don't think the Jets have all the peices yet but we'll see. They have a lot of question marks going into the season... So much football to look forward to!

(I'll need to change the look of my site to be more Patriots oriented soon!)
